Digital technologies are fundamentally changing the lives of individuals and society as a whole. On the one hand, digitalization offers enormous potential for freedoms, such as global networking and new forms of political participation. On the other hand, it challenges the traditional notion of freedom through increasing surveillance, data collection, and the concentration of power in the hands of a few technology companies.
Digitalization has democratized access to knowledge and resources. But does this mean the individual is lost? Are we on the way to a society in which the unique must give way to algorithmic uniformity? This Weizenbaum debate examines how free individuals and society really are today and how that has developed over the past few decades.
