Lawrence Lek is an artist, filmmaker and musician. He combines various practices and disciplines - architecture, games, video, music and fiction - to create a constantly expanding cinematic universe. Over the past ten years, Lek has used the common media of his generation, such as video games and computer-generated animations, in site-specific installations and virtual worlds, which he himself describes as "three-dimensional collages of found objects and situations". In his works, which often incorporate interlocking narratives and the recurring figure of the wanderer, he explores the myth of technological progress in a time of social change.
The extensive NOX exhibition explores the psychological consequences of a future populated by smart systems and intelligent machines. Visitors are invited to explore three floors of the Farsight Corporation's premises, where the fictional artificial intelligence (AI) company trains and treats its self-driving, sentient cars. Each class of car has different areas of responsibility, such as deliveries, security services or leisure and pleasure, which correspond to the personality types of the cars. If cars display undesirable behavior, they are ordered to a center called NOX - short for "Nonhuman Excellence" - and undergo a five-day rehabilitation program.
