Deceptively real - how do we recognize deepfakes? - MISSION KI x re:publica

Deepfakes manipulate opinions and undermine trust in the media and democracy. How can we recognize fakes, combat disinformation and take social responsibility? We discuss risks, solutions and regulatory approaches from different perspectives.

Deepfakes are everywhere and difficult to recognize. Fake media content is often used to manipulate opinion and can therefore cause immense damage. Deepfakes have taken on a new dimension. Fake news is more difficult to recognize and therefore even more dangerous - in conjunction with social media, it is a challenge for democracy.

What can we do to counter the destructive potential of deepfakes? How can we better identify fake content and protect our society?

As part of re:publica 2025, MISSION KI invites you to a panel talk to discuss this important topic. Northern Irish politician Cara Hunter will be taking part. She will share her personal experiences with deepfake attacks and talk about political spaces for action. Jano Costard from the federal agency SPRIND shows how his organization is working on solutions to better detect deepfakes. Together we ask: How much fake can democracy take? And how can risk be turned into responsibility?

The side event will take place in the IQZ of MISSION KI in the German Museum of Technology (Möckernstraße 26, 10963 Berlin). A guided tour through the interactive AI exhibition is possible at 6 pm without prior registration.

Speaker:

  • Cara Hunter, Politician
